Laurie Bartley

Laurie Bartley was born in Basildon, Essex, England in 1977.  

Intrigued by family photo albums and his father who was a keen amateur Photographer, Bartley grew-up taking photographs.  Later, he went on to study photography in Norfolk before moving to London where to work as an Assistant Photographer.

Bartley’s passion for cinema begun to inspire and shape his stills fashion Photography.   Initially experimenting with film lighting, Bartley then begun applying techniques more familiar in filmmaking to his process.  Using narrative, character building, set design, props and special effects, with a notion to the Mise-en-scene, Bartley’s fashion images begun to reminisce film stills, where models were actresses and poses actions. 

Bartley’s work first appeared in the pages of the Fashion Industry’s leading avant-garde publications, including Dazed & Confused and The Face.

Influenced by his passion for cinema, Bartley’s approach to stills photography was shaped by his use of film lighting techniques, narrative, character building, set design, props, and special effects.

Bartley’s photographs have been featured in publications including British Vogue, Elle US, Elle France, AnOther Magazine, Departures, Numero, and Nippon Vogue.  He has also photographed advertising campaigns for Dior, Max Factor, Equinox, Tod’s, Jean Paul Gaultier, Bulgari, Anna Sui, and Diesel, among others.  

Bartley’s directorial credits include a series of short films entitled Near Yonder, recently presented on NOWNESS; a motion campaign for Equinox; and a documentary short for Vogue China about the pioneering artist and architect, Gaetano Pesce.

 

Bartley lives between New York and Paris.
